WHAT IS A MANUFACTURERS’ EXPORT
SALES REPRESENTATIVE?
Manufacturers' international representatives are independent professional providers of export sales and marketing services to manufacturers or suppliers.
They are one or more persons acting as an independent proprietor, partnership or cooperation that represents two or more related but non-competitive lines in a well defined and exclusive territory, and is compensated primarily on a commission basis for goods shipped or billed from the factory or company represented. Manufacturers who want to lower and stabilize sales expenses relative to the actual flow of orders can turn to manufacturers' representatives to augment their export sales and marketing function.
The manufacturers' export representative also supplies other valuable services such as credit reports, market research and market development information, sales analysis, new product development, warehousing, installation and
demonstration, product quoting, product/sales training, new product development, current product improvements and in some cases consulting and design engineering.
Typically, the manufacturers' export representative receives
credit to all sales within the territory. As part of the sales operation the representative maintains a sales office, compensates clerical and sales personnel, and assumes responsibility for all sales operating expenses.
In
addition, the export representative may take title to goods if a buy-sell relationship is preferable to the manufacturer.
